🐐🏗️🌞3 Must-Read Picture Books for Kids by Linda Joy Singleton

Before illustrators work their magic, picture books begin with words arranged in a certain way to move, entertain, or celebrate something or someone. Author Linda Singleton has created picture text that entertains and teaches wonderful wordplay. Today, I am excited to review three of her titles all written with simple verbs: Crane & Crane, Sun & Son, and Kid & Kid.

Crane & Crane

Crane & Crane is a delightful exploration of the relationship between a construction crane and a bird of the same name. Singleton weaves a charming narrative that highlights the similarities and differences between the two cranes, teaching young readers about friendship and coexistence. The construction crane, with its towering metal structure, and the bird crane, with its graceful wings, come together in a heartwarming tale that emphasizes the beauty of diversity.

The illustrations in Crane & Crane are lovely. Richard Smyth’s use of watery wash of colors and intricate details brings the story to life, captivating the imagination of children and adults alike. Each page is a visual feast, with scenes that are both dynamic and serene, perfectly complementing the narrative’s ebb and flow.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Crane & Crane offers valuable lessons about teamwork and understanding.

Sun & Son

In Sun & Son, Singleton takes readers on a journey through the natural world, exploring the relationship between a father and son as they bond over their shared love of the outdoors. The story is a beautiful celebration of familial love and the simple joys of spending time together in nature.

Singleton’s narrative captures the tender moments between the father and son with kindness and sensitivity. The book’s wordplay is complemented by stunning illustrations that depict the changing landscapes and seasons, creating a richness in colors and textures that draw readers into the story. It’s a perfect read for families who cherish their time outdoors and wish to instill a love of nature in their children.

Kid & Kid

In the third book of the series, Kid & Kid is a whimsical tale that follows the adventures of a young child and a mischievous goat. Singleton’s storytelling shines in this lighthearted and humorous book, which is sure to elicit giggles and smiles from young readers. The antics of the kid (both the child and the goat) are endearing and relatable, making this book a delightful addition to any child’s library.

The illustrations in Kid & Kid are playful and full of energy, capturing the spirited nature of the characters. The interactions between the child and the goat are depicted with warmth and humor, highlighting the bond between them.

At its core, Kid & Kid is a story about friendship and the joys of childhood. It encourages children to embrace their playful side. The book also subtly imparts lessons about responsibility and caring for others, making it a valuable read for young audiences.
